If you are planning your stay, you can pair this sustainability experience with AYANA Farm Walk, Root Ball Farm Experience, Traditional Herbal Remedies, and Farm-to-Bar Workshop.

Set within AYANA Bali, the two-hectare AYANA Farm is a sustainable, edible botanical garden cultivating 130+ varieties of flowers, vegetables, fruits, and herbs. Beyond supplying fresh, seasonal produce, it reflects AYANA’s commitment to sustainability and ecological stewardship. Guests can reconnect with nature through relaxed garden walks and hands-on sessions that blend traditional wisdom with modern, earth-friendly techniques.

At AYANA Farm, organic inputs are cycled back into the farm system through three methods:

Method
What it does
Where it is used

Hot compost
Accelerates decomposition and supports soil enrichment
Main planting beds

Worm compost (vermicompost)
Produces nutrient-rich compost for early plant growth
Seedlings and nursery support

Compost tea
Liquid microbial support applied during growing cycles
Soil and crop health maintenance

This circular process helps reduce organic waste while improving soil health and farm productivity.

The Art of Composting

Our composting journey at AYANA Farm begins with a rich blend of materials sourced primarily on-site. Kitchen scraps are mixed with horse manure from our stables and fallen leaves collected on the property. By using an efficient composting system that harnesses the power of nature, we create a vibrant ecosystem that supports the growth of our crops. We use three types of composting at AYANA Farm: hot compost, worm compost, and compost tea.

Hot Compost

Our hot compost method involves creating larger piles of organic matter with the right balance of carbon-rich and nitrogen-rich materials. Hot compost can reach temperatures of 54-66°C (130-150°F), which not only breaks down organic matter more quickly but also kills weeds and potential pathogens. This results in a sterile, nutrient-rich compost that’s ready to use in a fraction of the time required for traditional composting.

Worm Compost (Vermicompost)

Our worm composting system uses upcycled old bathtubs from past renovations, adding nature’s own little recyclers to enhance the nutrient content of our compost. These hardworking worms break down organic waste, turning it into a rich, dark humus that nourishes our seedlings.

Compost Tea

We also create compost tea, a nutrient-rich liquid produced by steeping our finished hot or worm compost in water, often with added molasses to feed beneficial microorganisms. The resulting brew is teeming with beneficial bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and nematodes that dramatically enhance soil and plant health.

The Circular Nature of Our Composting System and Farm

What makes our overall farm system truly special is its circular nature. Each component of our system feeds into and enhances the others:

– We use our own compost to create compost tea.

– Some of this compost tea is then reintroduced into our compost piles, accelerating the decomposition process by introducing beneficial microorganisms.

– We apply hot compost to our plant beds, use worm compost for seedlings, and regularly spray compost tea throughout the farm to improve soil health and support our crops.

– Any vegetable waste from our farm is recycled back into our compost piles, completing the circle.

This interconnected system ensures that nothing goes to waste and that we’re constantly improving the fertility and health of our soil.

By implementing this circular composting system, we’re not just reducing waste – we’re transforming it into a valuable resource that nourishes our plants, enriches our soil, and ultimately produces healthier, more nutritious food for our guests.

At AYANA Farm, we steer clear of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, opting instead for natural solutions.

We place huge emphasis on soil health and apply methods like crop rotation and intercropping to prevent pests and disease, ensuring that our land remains fertile for years to come.

Embracing the quirks of nature is part of the magic here. When you see a vegetable with a few bites taken out of it by insects, it’s a clear sign of the pure, untainted way it was grown. As our guide Andika says, “Next time you’re shopping for veggies, go for the ones that have some insect bites; it means they’re free from chemicals!”

Tumpang Sari: Indonesia’s Traditional Permaculture

At AYANA Farm, we incorporate principles from Tumpang Sari, a traditional Indonesian agricultural practice. This system shares many similarities with permaculture, embracing organic methods, biodiversity and sustaining the environment. Tupang Sari often involves growing two or more crops simultaneously on the same piece of land (intercropping or polyculture), creating a complementary relationship between the plants, comparable to companion planting. Key aspects include:

– Plant Diversity: We use intercropping or polyculture, growing a mix of crops such as rice, vegetables, beans, and herbs together, which benefit one another.

– Soil Health: Plant diversity improves soil structure and reduces erosion. The combination of root systems helps maintain soil fertility and moisture levels.

– Pest Management: The diversity of crops helps reduce pest outbreaks. Different plants attract various beneficial insects, providing natural pest control.

– Cultural Significance: Tumpang Sari reflects the wisdom and knowledge passed down through generations, promoting sustainability in farming communities.

In our dedicated section for preserving local crops, we showcase hardy, nutritious and local varieties that are perfectly suited for our unique environment in Jimbaran. Some highlights include:

– Diverse Bean Varieties: Rich in protein and fiber, these beans not only provide nutrition but are also excellent drought-tolerant options.

– Sorghum: A resilient grain that excels in challenging climates, sorghum is a staple that can contribute to food security.

– Job’s Tears: This rare grain, once widely used, is packed with nutrients and ideally suited for our local conditions. It’s a true testament to the potential of heritage seeds.

By cultivating these crops, we are nurturing a connection between the wisdom of the past and the innovations of the future, ensuring that the foods of tomorrow are deeply rooted in our rich agricultural legacy.
